How Sunscreen Actually Works: UVA vs. UVB, SPF and PA Ratings, and Choosing SPF for Post-Procedure Skin

Sunscreen works by absorbing or reflecting ultraviolet radiation before it can damage skin, and choosing the right one means understanding two different threats — UVA and UVB — and the ratings that measure protection against each. For anyone recovering from a cosmetic or laser procedure, correct sunscreen use is one of the most effective ways to protect results and prevent pigmentation. This guide explains how sunscreens function, what SPF and PA labels actually mean, and how to choose and apply sunscreen on healing skin.

UVA vs. UVB: two different threats

Ultraviolet light reaches skin mainly as UVA and UVB. UVB has shorter wavelengths and primarily affects the surface, causing sunburn and playing a major role in skin cancer. UVA penetrates deeper, drives much of photoaging — wrinkles and loss of elasticity — and contributes strongly to pigmentation problems. UVA passes through clouds and window glass and is fairly constant through daylight hours, which is why "broad-spectrum" protection against both UVA and UVB, worn daily, is the standard dermatological recommendation rather than sunscreen reserved only for sunny days.

How the two sunscreen types protect you

Chemical (organic) sunscreens contain filters that absorb ultraviolet radiation and dissipate it as small amounts of heat. Mineral (physical) sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that largely reflect and scatter UV and also absorb some of it. Both can provide excellent broad-spectrum protection; mineral formulas are often preferred for sensitive or freshly treated skin and for pigment-prone skin because they can also help block some visible light. Modern products frequently blend approaches, so the practical question is broad-spectrum coverage and how well you tolerate the texture.

What SPF actually measures

SPF, or sun protection factor, measures protection primarily against UVB — the sunburn spectrum. The numbers are not linear in the way many assume: SPF 30 blocks roughly 97% of UVB and SPF 50 around 98%, so the jump from 30 to 50 is modest. More important than chasing a high number is applying enough product and reapplying it. SPF also says little about UVA protection on its own, which is why relying on SPF alone can leave you underprotected against the rays most associated with aging and pigmentation.

PA ratings and the UVA side of the label

Because SPF addresses UVB, separate systems indicate UVA protection. In Korea and much of Asia you will see the PA rating, shown as PA+ through PA++++, where more plus signs indicate greater UVA protection. Elsewhere you may see a UVA-in-a-circle logo or a "broad-spectrum" claim. For daily use, and especially for post-procedure or pigment-prone skin, look for strong UVA protection — a high PA rating or a clear broad-spectrum designation — rather than focusing only on the SPF figure.

Choosing SPF for post-procedure skin

Healing skin after laser, peels, or surgery is more reactive and more prone to pigmentation, so sun protection becomes especially important. Once your provider confirms the skin barrier is ready for sunscreen, many recommend a broad-spectrum product with high SPF and strong UVA protection, often favoring gentle mineral formulas on sensitive or newly treated areas. Until then, physical protection — hats, shade, and simply avoiding sun — carries the load. Always follow your clinic's specific timeline for when and what to apply on treated skin.

Application: the step most people get wrong

Sunscreen only delivers its labeled protection when applied generously and reapplied. Studies suggest most people apply far less than the amount used in testing, effectively getting a fraction of the stated SPF. A common guideline is roughly a quarter-teaspoon for the face and neck, applied before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours outdoors or after sweating or swimming. Layering under makeup is fine, but powders and touch-ups rarely provide full reapplication on their own. Consistency and quantity matter more than the exact product.

Common myths worth correcting

Darker skin still needs sunscreen — more melanin offers some protection but not enough to prevent photoaging or pigmentation, and PIH is a particular concern for deeper tones. A high SPF does not make you invulnerable or extend safe sun time indefinitely. Sunscreen has not been shown to block meaningful vitamin D for most people in normal use. And cloudy days still transmit UVA. Treating sunscreen as a daily habit rather than a beach-only product is the mindset most aligned with the evidence.

Is mineral or chemical sunscreen better?

Neither is universally better; both can provide strong broad-spectrum protection. Mineral formulas are often gentler on sensitive or freshly treated skin, while chemical formulas tend to feel lighter. The best sunscreen is a broad-spectrum one you will actually apply consistently.

What SPF should I use after a laser or peel?

Once your provider clears you to use sunscreen, a broad-spectrum product with high SPF and strong UVA protection is commonly advised, frequently a mineral formula for sensitive skin. Follow your clinic's specific instructions on timing for treated areas.

Does a higher SPF let me stay out longer?

Not reliably. Higher SPF modestly increases UVB protection but does not justify extended unprotected exposure, and it does not by itself guarantee strong UVA protection. Reapplication and shade remain essential regardless of the number.

Do I need sunscreen indoors or on cloudy days?
