Canthoplasty Cost in Korea vs Japan, Thailand and the United States: A Complete Price Guide

Quick answer Canthoplasty cost in Korea is generally lower than in Japan and substantially lower than in the United States, while Thailand sits close to or slightly below Korean pricing for the procedure alone. The comparison is misleading unless scope is matched: lateral canthoplasty, medial epicanthoplasty and a combined eyelid operation are priced differently, and many Korean quotes assume the procedure is bundled with double eyelid surgery. For a single modest-cost eye procedure, airfare and accommodation can exceed the price gap entirely, so travelling for canthoplasty alone rarely makes financial sense on its own.

In this guide

What canthoplasty is, and which operation is priced

Canthoplasty is surgery on the corner of the eye, and the term covers two distinct operations that are frequently conflated in pricing. Lateral canthoplasty addresses the outer corner, altering the horizontal dimension or the position of the lateral canthus. Medial epicanthoplasty addresses the inner corner, typically reducing an epicanthal fold to expose more of the inner eye. They are different procedures with different risk profiles and different prices.

A quote is therefore uninterpretable until you know which operation it covers, whether it is unilateral or bilateral, and whether it is standalone or combined. Before comparing any figures, read our explanation of canthoplasty in Korea and how lateral and medial surgery differ, because matching the operation matters more than matching the currency.

Indicative price ranges by country

The ranges below are indicative figures assembled from publicly advertised clinic pricing rather than from a structured market survey, and they are estimates with a moderate confidence level at best. Advertised prices skew low, exclude items that appear later, and move with exchange rates. Treat the table as an orientation to orders of magnitude, not as a quotation, and obtain written itemised quotes before planning anything.

Why Korean pricing sits where it does

Korean pricing for eyelid and eye-corner surgery reflects volume rather than a subsidy. A dense concentration of clinics performing these operations very frequently in a competitive market produces both lower unit prices and, at the better clinics, considerable procedural experience. That combination is the actual argument for Korea on this category of surgery, and it is a stronger argument than price alone.

The same competitive density produces the downside: aggressive marketing, bundled pricing designed to raise the average transaction value, and wide quality variation between clinics charging similar amounts. Low price and high volume do not guarantee a good outcome at any particular clinic, which is why verification of the individual surgeon matters more here than in markets with fewer providers.

The bundling problem in Korean quotes

Eye-corner surgery is very often quoted as part of a combined eyelid operation rather than on its own, because in practice it is frequently performed alongside double eyelid surgery. This makes cross-border comparison harder than it looks: a Korean figure that appears low may be the incremental price of adding epicanthoplasty to a double eyelid procedure, while a United States figure may be the full standalone price of the corner surgery by itself.

Ask each clinic for the standalone price and the combined price separately, in writing. Our guide to package deals in Korean plastic surgery explains the bundling structure, and the method for normalising quotes is set out in our breakdown of hidden costs. For context on the adjacent and more commonly compared operation, see our double eyelid surgery cost comparison.

The costs that sit outside the quote

For an international patient the surgical fee is rarely the largest line. Return airfare, accommodation for the minimum required stay, local transport, pre-operative tests often billed on the day, any additional follow-up visits beyond those included, and working days lost all belong in the comparison. Our procedure-by-procedure day count gives the stay length that drives most of this.

Then add the contingent cost that patients routinely omit: revision. If a revision is needed, the fee may or may not be covered, but the second set of flights and accommodation almost certainly is not. Our guide to revision policies at Korean clinics sets out the terms to establish in advance.

When travelling for this procedure makes sense

On arithmetic alone, flying to Korea for a standalone eye-corner procedure is often a poor trade for patients from countries where the price gap is modest, because travel costs absorb the saving. The calculation changes materially in three situations: when the corner surgery is part of a larger eyelid plan where the absolute saving is bigger, when the patient is travelling from a country where this surgery is expensive or the relevant expertise is thin, or when the patient is already travelling to Korea for another reason.

It also changes if the motivation is experience rather than cost. A patient prioritising a surgeon who performs this specific operation very frequently may reasonably travel even without a saving, and that is a defensible decision provided it is made for that reason and not inferred from price.

What should drive the decision instead of price

Eye-corner surgery is unforgiving and the complications are visible: scarring at the corner, asymmetry between sides, overcorrection producing an unnatural shape, and functional problems such as dryness or altered tear drainage. Some of these are difficult to revise well, which is why the operating surgeon’s specific experience with this procedure should outrank the quoted fee in your decision.

Confirm specialty certification and the operating surgeon by name, as set out in our guide to verifying the operating surgeon, and work through our 15-point clinic verification checklist before any deposit. A fee difference is recoverable; a poorly executed eye corner is not easily undone.

How to read the figures in this article

The ranges here are estimates drawn from advertised clinic pricing and are offered only to indicate relative orders of magnitude between markets. They are not quotations, they do not account for your anatomy or the specific operation you need, and they will move with exchange rates and local market conditions. No outcome can be promised by any surgeon in any country. Frequently asked questions

Is canthoplasty cheaper in Korea than in Japan?

Advertised Korean pricing is generally lower than Japanese pricing for comparable eye-corner surgery, though the gap is usually moderate rather than dramatic. Once airfare and accommodation are added, the net saving for a Japanese patient travelling for this procedure alone can be small.

Why do Korean quotes vary so much for the same procedure?

Because the quotes often cover different operations. Lateral canthoplasty, medial epicanthoplasty, unilateral versus bilateral surgery, and standalone versus combined eyelid procedures are priced differently. Ask for the standalone and combined prices separately and in writing before comparing.

Is the cheapest Korean clinic a reasonable choice?

Not on price alone. Eye-corner surgery is technically unforgiving and its complications are visible and sometimes hard to revise, so the operating surgeon’s specific experience with the procedure should outweigh a modest fee difference in your decision.

Does the quote normally include revision?

Usually not, or only within a limited window with exclusions. Even where a revision fee is waived, the second set of flights and accommodation is almost never covered. Establish the revision terms in writing before you pay a deposit.

Should I combine canthoplasty with double eyelid surgery to save money?

Combining can reduce the incremental cost, but the decision should be clinical rather than financial. Whether both operations suit your anatomy and goals is a question for an examining surgeon, and a bundle that includes a procedure you do not need is not a saving.
