In practice it signals that the surgeon is planning for structural support and added projection rather than removal of tissue.
The distinction is not absolute. A patient of Korean descent with a prominent dorsum and thin skin may be planned as a reduction case. A Caucasian patient with a low radix and thick skin may be planned as an augmentation case. Anatomy, not ancestry, drives the plan. This matters when you compare consultation notes or quotes across countries, because the same procedure name can describe two very different operations with different operative times, materials, and risk profiles.
Skin Thickness: The Variable That Governs Everything Else
Soft-tissue envelope thickness is arguably the single most influential planning variable. Thicker skin, more common over the Asian nasal tip, conceals minor contour irregularities, which is a genuine advantage. It also resists definition: a surgeon can build a refined cartilage framework underneath and see relatively little of it expressed at the surface.
